Explore the Outdoors with New Backpack Program

NEW! Early Birders Outdoor Exploration Backpacks are now available to check out all branches of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library System (MFRL). The Early Birders Backpacks include binoculars, bird guides, and activities. Visit the Outdoor Exploration Backpack page to view the Early Birders backpack tutorial and see other resources.

In early spring 2021, we’ll add Stream Exploration Backpacks to the library system. The Stream Exploration Backpacks will provide lessons about local watersheds, storm water management practices, and the equipment and instructions to perform benthic macroinvertebrate or “stream bug” sampling in local streams.

All backpacks will include flash drives that provide tutorials as well as guides to local parks and serve as an environmental education resource for families tailored to meet standards of learning for grades 4-7.

This program is supported by the 2020 Virginia Wildlife Grant Program through a partnership between the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia. The Town of Blacksburg is funding 4 of the Stream Exploration Backpacks.
