Explore the Outdoors with New Backpack Program

NEW! Outdoor Exploration Backpacks are now available to check out from the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library System (MFRL). This fall, 8 Early Birders backpacks are available, and early next spring, we’ll add 10 Stream Exploration Backpacks. This program will serve as an environmental education resource for families tailored to meet standards of learning for grades 4-7.

The Early Birders Backpacks include binoculars, bird guides, and activities. The Stream Exploration Backpacks will provide lessons about local watersheds, storm water management practices, and the equipment and instructions to perform benthic macroinvertebrate or “stream bug” sampling in local streams. All backpacks will include flash drives that provide tutorials as well as guides to local parks.

This program is supported by the 2020 Virginia Wildlife Grant Program through a partnership between the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia. The Town of Blacksburg is funding 4 of the Stream Exploration Backpacks.
